Where is Singapore?

"Where is Singapore?"

When I was at the Verbier music festival in 2008, many people asked me where is Singapore. So here goes..

Singapore is a small, young and vibrant Asian country just north of the equator, south of Malaysia. It's very warm and humid here all year round.

Singapore is a friendly and open city, welcoming to foreigners. Singapore's population was 4.84 million in 2008. Out of this, a big proportion is from overseas.

Despite being an Asian country, English is taught as a first language in schools. It's also what we speak at work. That helps to keep our multicultural society harmonious.

Learning Music in Singapore

Many children learn music in Singapore. The most popular instrument here is the piano. Most take lessons either with private piano teachers or with music schools outside school hours. ABRSM and Trinity College music exams are very popular here.

Singapore set up its first independent pre-tertiary arts school, named School of the Arts in 2006. It offers a unique arts and academic curriculum for students aged 13 to 18.

Until recently, the universities in Singapore did not offer music degree courses. Since 2001, the Yong Siew Toh conservatory was set up at the National University of Singapore (NUS). It is a collaboration between NUS and the famed Peabody Institute of the John Hopkins University of USA.

With this active collaboration, many world class musicians have conducted masterclasses here. In 2009, we had the rare privilege of watching masterclasses by Leon Fleisher.

Arts and Culture in Singapore

In promoting arts and culture in Singapore, the government built a world-class performing arts centre known as the Esplanade in 2002. It has since attracted many international artistes and performing groups here. This is the premier concert venue in Singapore and also the home of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Another venue for classical concerts is the Victoria Concert Hall.

Sistic is the main ticketing agent for concerts, musicals and other events in Singapore. Online purchase of tickets is recommended. Though Singapore is generally a very efficient country, queues at sistic counters can be long and slow.

This is the website of our very own symphony orchestra. It is one of Asia's leading orchestras and has won many rave reviews through the years.
